Bucket List

1. Check out the Chiostro di San Francesco!

Right before reaching the Villa Comunale di Sorrento, a beautiful public park that offers a panoramic view of the bay area, is Chiostro di San Francesco! The Chiostro is a 14th-century monastery featuring beautiful columns and greenery. If you're looking for a view, this is the perfect place to check out! Not only do you get a view but you also get an art exhibit! To the left of the entrance is a walkway to an art exhibit featuring the works of Raffaele Celentano, an artist from Sorrento! The photographs are black-and-white, memorializing Italian culture over time through shots of various people as well as landscapes! Whether you're an art history buff or someone just looking for some peace and quiet, the Chiostro di San Francesco is a must-see!

2. Take a day-trip to Pompeii, Naples, Capri, etc.!

If you're feeling adventurous, take a day trip to some of these other iconic areas! Step on the Circumvesuviana train and you can step back in time by checking out the ruins of Pompeii!

While a bit further out, Circumvesuviana will also take you to Naples which offers seven castles, archeological museums, and the birthplace of pizza!

If you're in an oceanic mood but want to escape Sorrento, take a ferry from the port of Marina Piccola in Sorrento to visit the enchanting island of Capri! Even further out, there is also the island of Ischia which is an hour off the bay of Naples. While Ischia is a bit further out, it's also less expensive than Capri and also less touristy!

3. Eat All The Foods!

Hungry? Here are some food places to check out while you're in Sorrento!

  • Frankie's Pizza Bar - So many pizza options and all the time to try almost if not each and every single one of them! Not only is Frankie's Pizza Bar affordable but it's also all-encompassing, including not just pizza but pasta and sandwiches in their menu. While there's often a line, it's definitely worth the wait!
  • A'Marenna - This is an affordable option for anyone looking for a quick bite to eat and take to either Piazza Vittoria or their dorm/apartment! A'Marenna is run by two lovely women who put just as much heart into the sandwiches they make for you as much as they do their singing! They manage to turn sandwich-making -- of all processes, into a performance!
  • La Cantinaccia del Popolo - If you're looking for a nice sit-down restaurant to eat at with your friends, don't miss La Cantinaccia del Popolo! Make sure to get there early as there's usually a line; even with the line, though, it is 100% worth it! If you're lucky, the owner will offer samples of wine and cheese as a mini aperitivo before your meal!
  • Pasticceria Mimi - Going through iced coffee withdrawals? Pasticceria Mimi is a well-beloved bar by all our students! Not only do they have iced coffee but they also have delectable pastries!

4. Weekend Trips!

Thanks to Italy's excellent network of high-speed trains, almost any location in Italy can be a weekend trip. Even better if you can connect with our local site director and/or fellow students for ideas.

  • Rome and the Vatican (CIS Abroad location) - The current capital of Italy and the center of the Catholic Church, Rome has no shortage of historical sites to visit. The Colosseum is its most famous sight, but there is much more to offer here.
  • Florence (CIS Abroad location) - a beautiful city in northern Italy known for its vibrant art scene, hailing from its distinction as the birthplace of the Renaissance. It's a place for any student to soak in the good food, fascinating history, and relaxed Italian lifestyle.
  • Milan - a must see for fashion aficionados, containing the world headquarters of many of Italy's most famous brands. However, Milan is also one of Italy's largest cities, with notable contributions to the fields of art, design, education, and research.

  • Venice - A city so famous it hardly needs introduction, Venice is an excellent candidate for a weekend trip to the land of water.
